5 tips to end procrastination

Procrastination is a common behaviour that affects many business owners. It is defined as the act of delaying or postponing tasks or decisions that need to be completed to move the business forward.

When procrastination turns into a chronic habit then it is worthwhile paying some extra attention to discover what it may be trying to teach you about yourself.

Failure to do so can lead to negative consequences in both your personal and professional life. This blog post will explore the causes of procrastination and touch upon some strategies to help you overcome it.

Causes of Procrastination

There are many reasons why people procrastinate.  Within Psychodynamic coaching we use the symptoms of procrastination to uncover the root of the issue and clear it at the source.

Some indications you may be struggling with procrastination when launching and scaling your business include:

1. Fear of Failure: One of the most common reasons for procrastination is the fear of failure. Many people put off tasks because they worry that they won’t do them well or that they will fail.

2. Lack of Motivation: Another reason for procrastination is a lack of motivation. When people don’t feel motivated to complete a task, they are more likely to put it off.  This doesn’t necessarily mean that you do not want the outcome, though could be a sign that there is something deeper at play.

3. Perfectionism: Some individuals have a tendency to be perfectionists, and they may delay starting or completing a task because they want to ensure that it is perfect.  A need for perfectionism is crippling, as nothing is ever truly perfect, leaving this one unaddressed would seriously undermine your chance of success.

4. Overwhelm: When a task seems too large or complicated, people may feel overwhelmed and avoid it altogether.

5. Lack of Structure: Individuals who lack structure or organization may find it difficult to prioritize their tasks and may procrastinate as a result.

Strategies for Overcoming Procrastination

If you find yourself struggling with procrastination, there are several strategies that can help you navigate it:

1. Set Goals: Setting specific, achievable goals can help you stay focused and motivated. Break larger tasks into smaller, more manageable goals to make them less overwhelming.

2. Create a Plan: Develop a plan for how you will approach and complete the task. This can help you stay organized and focused.

3. Remove Distractions: Identify and remove any distractions that may be preventing you from focusing on the task at hand. Turn off your phone or log out of social media to avoid interruptions.

4. Start Small: Begin with a small task or a part of the larger task to get momentum going. Once you start making progress, it will be easier to continue.

5. Reward Yourself: Offer yourself a reward for completing a task, such as a break or a treat. This can help motivate you to complete the task and make it more enjoyable.

And what to do if that doesn’t work

If you try the above suggestions and you still find yourself sitting on the fence rather than taking the much needed action to build your business, than that may be a symptom that there is something deeper at play.

Once the physical barriers have been overcome, the strategy has been outlined and the goals defined, the next natural place to look for barriers is within the mind.

When you have a solid action plan, plenty of time to complete it and still nothing is materialising that is a sure fire sign that something needs integrating at a deeper level of conscious awareness.

It could be something related to how you see yourself, a hidden belief of how the world works or even a fear of judgement from others.

One way you can start to uncover these stories is to pay attention to the feelings you have around completing business related tasks.  Anytime you feel fearful, angry or resentful is a useful indication that something deeper is amiss and needs clearing to help get you on your way to business building mastery.

A quick tip here is to just sit with the emotion and just allow it to be there, as what you resist will persist.
